I don’t understand why people think it’s a good idea to get their infant’s ears pierced. How is forcing a body modification on your non-consenting child okay? Does the Golden Rule, treat others the way you would want to be treated, not apply to parent/child relationships? I’m fairly certain that you, the parent, would want to be in charge of your own body and to be in charge of its decorations. You wouldn’t want anyone to force you to change your appearance against your will just because they think it’s in your favor. What makes you think your child would feel differently? It might seem trivial to some people, but I guess I just believe in autonomy and having rights and choices. As far as the “well they won’t remember the pain later!” argument, THAT’S trivial and kinda just silly because if they go to an actual reputable piercer and get it done properly, the pain will be minimal. And it’s over in a second, so the pain really isn’t that big of a deal. And they would probably be more satisfied with it that way because then it would be THEIR decision. And yes, all of that goes for circumcision too. All of the arguments for either of those things are generally ignorant and/or misleading.
I’m really glad that nobody forced me to get my ears pierced as an infant. Though I made the mistake of getting them pierced with a gun (at least now I know better and have the chance to actually learn from that mistake), I’m still happy that it was MY decision.
Plus, do you really think an infant/toddler would keep their dirty hands off that shit? You’re putting them at MORE of a risk of getting an infection because they don’t understand to not touch it.
/end long rant
When I become a piercer, I will definitely not pierce any child’s ears unless they can verbally consent and understand what’s going to happen before, during, and after the procedure.
